Lithium Ion batteries were invented for as long ago as 1912 from Gilbert N. Lewis, but it was a while before they were developed enough to become launched on a mass fast market level. This happened from the early 1990’ s through Sony pioneering their industrial use.
Lithium Ion batteries have several advantages.
They can be constructed in many shapes and sizes, resulting in them being tailored to the available space in the device in which they have to be used.
The batteries can also be much lighter than various equivalents, due to the nature of the material and the high open circuit voltage compared with other batteries. This low weight causes it to become ideal in hand held and mobile devices for obvious reasons, and popular in these days of high tech various gadgets.
Another major advantage is that they just don't suffer from memory influence. This is the illness, whereby other rechargeable batteries, if not fully released before recharging, lose their maximum energy capacity after some time and thus hold a lesser amount of charge.
They also do not need such a drastic personally discharge rate as additional batteries – just 5% every month, compared with up to 30% monthly in other battery varieties. However, Lithium Ion batteries will not be perfect, and there are drawbacks.

- Charge the battery early and infrequently, unlike other rechargeable batteries.

- When buying replacements, try to buy a battery that has your shortest possible time as a result of manufacture to retail. (though it can be difficult to find released this information).
In short Lithium Ion batteries is a very versatile battery, ideal in lightweight applications instead of subject to memory results. However, they do degrade at higher temperatures resulting in they are not a fabulous universal battery solution.
